How often will my motorhome need an MOT test?

The MOT requirement for a motorhome is the same as for a normal car.

Once your motorhome or campervan is over three years old it will require an annual service and MOT to ensure that it is roadworthy.

 

What sort of MOT test is required for a motorhome?

A class 4 MOT test covers cars, motor caravans and other vehicles that have the capacity for up to eight passengers and weigh 3,000kg or less. This is the same MOT test as a normal car and is sufficient for most motorhomes.

However, there are exceptions to this MOT test rule.

Larger motorhomes that exceed the weight and size limits for motorhomes may need a Class vii test as they fall into the same weight category as heavy goods vehicles.

If you have a converted van, the vehicle licensing agency may question whether it is a motorhome if it doesn't look sufficiently like one or if you are using it to store items not required for a living van, like bikes. The DVLA may decide that it is, in fact, a van with windows or a multi-purpose vehicle and change the entry in the V5C description section of the log book. A different MOT test may also be necessary depending on weight.

We don't mind where you bought your motorhome. We will still be happy to service it and carry out an MOT test for you.

Remember that the inside of your van will also need to be kept in great condition if you are to enjoy using your motorhome for years.

We can check gas and water supplies for you, ensuring that they are working correctly and meet safety standards. We will also check that your kitchen and bathroom facilities are in good order.

Anything else I need to know about owning a motorhome?

You will need to check that you have an appropriate driving licence.

The type of licence you require for a motor depends on your age and your vehicle's maximum authorised mass or MAM.

If your motorhome has a MAM of between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, you will need a category C1 licence.

To drive a motorhome with a MAM of over 7.5 tonnes, you need a category C licence.
