Motorhome Habitation Check

Specialist motorhome care in Manchester

What is a motorhome habitation service?

There are quite a few differences between a habitation check and a regular service. The check is exclusively for leisure vehicles, requiring a specialist motorhome engineer to take a thorough look at its living area, alongside any other features unique to motorhomes.

However, the habitation check is no less important than a service or MOT; it helps to keep your motorhome safe, makes sure it performs at the best of its ability, and could even increase its value. Through the expert checks at we provide at TMC, we can give peace of mind both to you and to potential buyers of your motorhome in the future.

How often should I get my habitation check?

Your motorhome’s habitation check is due once per year. This way, we can ensure it stays in its best condition, as potential problems can be picked up before they cause any lasting damage or devalue the motorhome.

You can book the check for any time in the year, so you may want to consider getting it done in-between the times you are most active in your motorhome. If you’re planning to travel a lot during the summer, why not book your habitation check for autumn, and catch any problems early.

However, if you suspect any major issues with your motorhome, such as damp, water damage, or problems with the facilities, we recommend getting in contact with us and booking a habitation service as soon as you can, regardless of the time of your last check.

Main areas covered in a habitation check

Here are just a few of the main areas we cover in our motorhome checks:

Fire Safety Check – Fire safety must be taken very seriously in motorhomes, and during the habitation service we will check the smoke alarm and CO detector to make sure they are in good working order and don’t need replacing. If you have a fire extinguisher, we will also check this along with the fire blanket.

Gas System Check – Gas poses a hazard in motorhomes, so it’s important to make sure that all the gas appliances are in good condition for your safety. We will check for gas leaks, and we will also check all the gas appliances, including the oven and the heating system. Gas vents must also be clear.

Water System Check – Water systems are another important area to be checked. The taps will be checked to make sure they are working properly without any leaks, and we will also check for blockages in the wastewater outlet. We will also look at the toilet and check that the flush is working properly.

Electrical System Check – We do a lot of checks covering a wide range of electrics, including all the lights, both internal and external. We will also carry out a residual current device (RCD) check, and we will look at the miniature circuit breakers and sockets to make sure they are in good condition. Electrical appliances, such as the fridge, are all looked at to ensure they are safe and in good working condition.

Bodywork Check – We will check over the whole bodywork, looking at the doors, windows and blinds to make sure they are working properly. We will carry out a visual inspection of all the bodywork, including the roof. A damp check will also be carried out inside to make sure there are no damp problems. Depending on the result of the damp check, extra work may be required.

The TMC Process

To book your habitation check, get in contact with us and let us know about your motorhome. You can do this via phone (01204 882211), email (service@tottingtonmotorcompany.co.uk), or by visiting us in person. You can book for free, and we’ll let you know the date of your check and if there’s anything else we’ll need.

On the day of your check, visit our workshop in Radcliffe to drop off your motorhome. We recommend doing so in the morning, as this way all the checks can be done by the time you finish work in the evening. We’re open after 8am on weekdays, but we’re happy to organise specific times with you.

Whilst the work is being done, you can grab a coffee and sit in the waiting area if you’d like. We also recommend visiting Newbank Garden Centre, which is only a five-minute walk away on Bury Road.

Another huge benefit of TMC is our pick-up and drop-off policy. If you live within a 5-mile radius of our workshop, we’ll come to you, and do all the driving for you. There’s a reason so many motorhome owners in Bury and Radcliffe trust us to take care of their of their vehicles.
